Casinos in the Netherlands
Casinos in the Netherlands are all owned by one company, Holland Casinos. Currently Holland Casinos has 14 casinos in the Netherlands, all linked together which provides quite impressive progressive jackpots. Holland Casinos is a state owned company, which means that some of the profits from the various casinos go back into the running of the country, instead of into private hands. All of the casinos close at 3am each morning, and you have to be over 18 to be admitted to the premises.
The first of the casinos in the Netherlands opened in 1976, so it is still a relatively new enterprise compared to some other places in Europe like Germany. Holland Casinos posted a loss in 2011 and 2012, which resulted in a call for privatisation of the company, which to date has not yet happened. Currently there are no legal online casinos in the Netherlands either. One did start, called Global Stars but was slapped with such a big fine that other operators have backed away and are not even trying. This is set to change however, as draft legislation is in the pipeline to liberalize the online gambling market in the Netherlands.
